Looking back, my last blog on “At the Feeder Today” was in July 2012 the hight of summer, now here we are in the start of Autumn/Fall and once again I have put fingers to keyboard, engaged brain (what is left of it) and produced this masterpiece of …..? Seriously folks, not much happens in the garde or at least my garden between July and end of September. The majority of my garden birds desert me for the good life in the woods. I still get visits from the starlings, wood pigeons. Nothing much to write about. Now with the onset of Autumnal weather they little birds are coming back to the feeder. Whilst I say it has been quiet in the garden, it was different in the wider world. During a walk in September I was lucky enough to get a reasonable shot of a Buzzard (Buteo buteo) soaring over my head near Roslyn. I’m always fascinated by these birds that hang in the air, with, apparently, very little effort or flapping of wings. The closest I have come to this was being up in a glider and soaring, all you hear is the wind as
the glider cuts through the air. On Sunday 7th October we (the Intrepids) paid a visit to Argarty to see the magnificent Red Kites (Milvus milvus). We usually do pay a visit in October then December/January. I thought we were going to be disappointed but I’m pleased to say the birds put in an appearance and their usual splendifferous flying display. Once again I say a Buzzard and was lucky enough to grab this shot as it flew past the hide.
As for in the garden at the feeder over the past week?
A first time visitor was a little Siskin (Carduelis spinus). When I first saw it I took it to be a juvinile Goldfinch, however, I soon identified it correctly. I’m pleased to say it is now a regular visitor to the feeding table. Another returning bird is the cheeky Chaffinch(Fringilla coelebs).
The usual suspects have put in an appearance. I have mentioned the Starlings, still noisy as they squabble over the fat balls and suet squares.
Recently there have been 4 Coal Tits ( Parus ater) on the feeder. Two of them continue to chase each other from feeder to tree to feeder occasionally stopping to grab a seed between flights/fights. Always fun to watch the little Tits as the flit from feeder to tree and hide in the middle of the foliage, then shoot out again to grab a seed.
